I'll need reason's help with this, but I keep hearing that with adjustments for inflation, gas prices were higher in the '70s.

Can someone please do the math?

The argument isn't whether the price of gas is more expensive now than in the 70's when adjusted for inflation (which I think, BTW, is a croc-o-shit argument). Forget Peak Oil. Faced with $3 a gallon gas which is likely to go higher, there are industry types and consumers that STILL think bigger is better. They still want the SUV's, the big trucks, the 12 mile a gallon behemoths because the "like the way it looks". The problem is that we can see the future; yet the path we're on as a nation couldn't be more clear: Oil is going to become scarce. Not disappear but become very costly. And when it does, we are going to be blaming everyone but ourselves for not having the foresight to prepare. Sometimes I hate the human race.

No worries, we're just about to wrap things up in Iraq, the soldiers will be home by X-mas, all that Iraqi oil is going to start flowing again, the market will be flooded, they'll practically be giving gas away...

I thought it was the early eighties when gas was at its all time high (adjusted for inflation). I wrote about this when gas was about a buck cheaper, so I'm not sure where we stand now. I think I heard that we still haven't reached the all time level.

With regards to SUV's some dealers are not accepting them as trade ins because the demand has fallen so much.

American auto manufacturers have taken a hit due to the fall in demand, but Toyota has actually seen an increase in sales partly due to their lead in the development of hybrid cars.

And then there is this point

    MONEY SAVERS?

Truth be told, the best way to save money on gas is to cut down on your trips. If you can stop on the way to or from work to pick something up, then do it. If you can possibly make thjree stops in one trip instead of three trips, then do it. Use the discounts when there, and try to use the shortest route possible when traveling.
